CITY OF WOLLONGONG BRASS BAND INC.
The second half of 2011 has been extremely busy for all bands.
On August 6, the brass band held a very successful ‘Brass at the Proms’ concert with guest artist Amanda Williams at the Illawarra Performing Arts Centre.
Then the brass band took part in the NSW State Championships at Penrith and came away with third place.
On August 15th the Brass band played for the Wollongong ‘Victory in the Pacific Service’ at the Cenotaph.
In October we established a Junior Wind Band giving us our fourth band which will now cater for the future growth of our bands.
Also during October with the support of Wollongong Public School we set up a music programme. This involves group and private tuition for brass and woodwind and will also build up into a school band.
Tara Fermor brought the Cammeray Primary School Concert Band to Wollongong Public School and gave an afternoon concert and demonstration to 300 students to show what can be achieved. This created enormous interest. That evening our junior brass members combined with the senior brass band and joined Cammeray to perform a combined concert for parents and students. We thank Tara and Cammeray Primary School for their support.
October ended with both of our Junior Brass and Junior Wind bands each performing a concert at the Diggers’ Rest Home, Corrimal which was very well received.
On November 6, the brass band held a combined concert with the Lamplighters Male Choir at the newly renovated Wollongong Town Hall. Our special guest was Russell Gray from the U.K. who played three solo items and conducted the band for a few numbers.
On Remembrance Day a number of available brass members played at the service held at Wollongong Cenotaph.
The next weekend all our brass players took part in the annual Viva La Gong parade.
Our Wind Band gave a performance in the Wollongong Mall Ampitheatre on Sunday November 20. The junior Wind Band was also featured by playing a few items.
The Brass Band led the St. John the Baptist parade from the Catholic Cathedral to the Italian Scalabrinian Fathers Church a few blocks away.
Christmas Carols in the Park for the Woonona Lions Club on Sunday December 11 was cancelled due to the weather.
The year will end when the Brass Band plays at Belmore Basin in Wollongong Harbour on New Year’s Eve prior to the fireworks.
Our Christmas Party will be held in our newly extended hall on December 16.
We wish you all a Happy Christmas and a successful New Year from all of us.
